The long loved Sweet Corn Day was hosted by the Advancing Research Enabling Communities Center (AREC) for the first time in 8 years on Sunday October 23, 2016. The event was organized by the newly established Food and Agriculture Student Society at FAFS in collaboration with AREC Director Dr. Mustapha Haidar and FAFS Student Records Officer Ms. Tharwat Haddad, and sponsored by Kassatly Chtaura, Dunkin Donuts, Lipton Ice Tea and the World Alumni Association at AUB.
Alumni, Students and Staff gathered and enjoyed a variety of activities ranging from hay rides, fair games, free food, folk dance, farmers market and thyme transplanting. Manaakish (Saj), donuts, soft drinks, Arabian coffee, open lunch buffet, and the delicious sweet corn were provided too. Children enjoyed fun fair games including spoon-egg racing, potato sack racing and other activities generously prepared and conducted by the Notre Dame de la Deliverance – Breij Scouts group. Attendees also enjoyed horseback and camelback riding. Before lunch, the folk dance band (Hayakel) from Baalbeck presented a special Dabkeh in which many of the guests participated and enjoyed this dance. Friends and families enjoyed the incidental reunion and had the chance to give their children a feel of the farm and their time spent at AREC as FAFS students. The day ended by transplanting over 500 Thyme seedlings generously provided by the Nature Conservation Center (NCC).
