The Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences hosted a Gala Dinner at Phoenicia Hotel, Eau De Vie on the occasion of AUB’s 150th Anniversary and the huge success of the First International Federation of Landscape Architecture (IFLA) Beirut 2016 Conference “Unfolding Middle Easter Landscapes” which was jointly organized by the FAFS Department of Landscape Design and Ecosystem Management (LDEM) at AUB, The Lebanese Landscape Association (LELA) and the Lebanese University.
Attendees included representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, the Lebanese University Dean of Agriculture, IFLA representatives and keynote speakers, the Lebanese Landscape Association (LELA) representatives, IFLA conference sponsors, AUB administration, FAFS Alumni Chapter and FAFS community. Also in attendance were members of the FAFS External Advisory Board including His Excellency Nabil De Freij, Mr. Raphael Debbane and Mr. Khalil Melki.
The welcome note was given by Master of Ceremony, Dr. Nayla Al-Akl, Assistant Professor at LDEM and Co-founder of LELA. Dr. Nahla Hwalla, Dean, FAFS then delivered her welcoming statement and expressed her appreciation to the IFLA conference organizing committee led by Dr. Jala Makhzoumi who is currently an associate faculty at FAFS, the LDEM department led by Dr. Rami Zurayk, and the Department of Landscape and Territory Planning at the Lebanese University chaired by Dr. Salma Samaha. She particularly recognized Dr. Makhzoumi’s passion, enthusiasm and dedication that have led AUB to being the first university in the region to host the IFLA conference.
Dean Hwalla extended her gratitude to the FAFS External Advisory Board for their continuous support. She also recognized the great support of the IFLA conference sponsors, saying “ the event would not have been possible without contributions from the office of the AUB Provost and the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Generous sponsorships by Khatib & Alami, Dar al Handasa and Middle East Airlines and the support of Golden Tulip Serenada Hotels, the Cedar Shouf Bio-reserve and FAFS Alumni Chapter, Lebanese University, and the Ministry of Agriculture for the Landscape Design and Ecosystem Management program”.
She proudly noted that “the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences is a Faculty of Firsts, continuously striving to be the first in responding to the needs of the society and offering disciplines that provide our eager students with the highest quality education”.
Dr. Jala Makhzoumi, Professor of Landscape Architecture and Co-founder and President of LELA spoke about the establishment of the Lebanese Landscape Association (LELA) that is certified by the International Federation of Landscape Architects as the national body in Lebanon. She underlined that LELA was founded in response to the need to recognize the evolving new Landscape profession and it serves as a locus for young professionals, network with Lebanese landscape industries and a way to link them with global events and best practices.
Guests enjoyed a dinner with delightful entertainment as they joyfully celebrated AUB’s 150th anniversary and the success of the IFLA 2016 conference.
