January 2009:

AUB and the National Council for Scientific Research launch 3 Associated Research Units

The first unit aims at researching the quality of air in Lebanon and is implemented in cooperation with the American University of Beirut and Universite Saint Joseph, while the second addresses the "Quality and Management of Water Resources in Lebanon" in cooperation with the American University of Beirut and the Lebanese American University, and the third addresses malnutrition and obesity in Lebanon and involves the American University of Beirut, Universite Saint Joseph, and Universite Saint-Esprit, Kaslik (USEK). The main goal of the first ARU is to monitor the quality of air and determine the percentage and nature of poisonous gases within the region of Greater Beirut and list the problems which have to be solved in order to improve air quality. Seven researchers are involved in this ARU: AUB professor of chemistry Najat Saliba and AUB professor of mechanical engineering Alan Shehadeh; as well as Dr. Wehbe Farah, Dr. Maher Abboud, Dr. Jocelyne Gerard, Dr. Nada Saliba, and Dr. Rita Zaarour from UniversitC) Saint Joseph. The CNRS will support this unit with $50,000 per annum for a period of three years.

Agriculture Seminar Sheds Light on Food Research Updates

The seminar, which took place in the Agriculture building room 203 on October 21, featured three twenty-minute-long power-point presentations by different scholars from AUB and outside. Organized by the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, the discussions focused on some of the advances in research on food and food-related issues.

Conference on current challenges in nutrition

Regional and international experts were gathered for the conference, which focused on eating disorders, obesity, and common hidden deficiencies, in addition to innovative management and intervention approaches for children and adolescents. Organized by the Lebanese Association for Nutrition and Food Sciences (LANFS) in collaboration with the Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences at the American University of Beirut (AUB), the conference on “Current Challenges in Adolescent and Child Nutrition” was held on October 24 at Issam Fares Hall. The event was held under the patronage of the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health and with the support of Nestlé as part of their “10 Signs of Good Nutrition”.

Dean Hwalla named Fellow of International Union for Nutritional Sciences

Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences Dean Nahla Hwalla was recently appointed a fellow of the International Union for Nutritional Sciences (IUNS). Dean Hwalla is the first IUNS member from the Middle East to receive this recognition.
