AUB hosts scientific conference on the basics of balanced and sensible nutrition
Organized by the Nutrition and Food Sciences Department (NFSCD) at FAFS in collaboration with the Lebanese Association for Nutrition and Food Sciences (LANFS), and Oldways, the conference gathered 11 international and regional scholars, nutritionists and other health professionals. A healthy diet coupled with physical activity is the surest way to fight the global epidemic of obesity that is afflicting children in the Arab region, said Nahla Hwalla, professor of nutrition and dean of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences (FAFS) at the American University of Beirut (AUB), during a scientific conference on "Basics of Balanced and Sensible Nutrition,” held at the Issam Fares Hall at AUB on April 21, 2011.
AREC DAY 2011: A day full of joy
A record number of 300 students and guests left behind their frustrations, wear and tear of life as they flocked to the Agricultural Research and Education Center (AREC) in the Beqa’a Valley for AREC Day on May 16, 2011. This year’s fun-filled AREC Day featured lots of interesting games, a student poster exhibition, an artsitic bag and cloth display, and delicious multi-cuisine refreshment selection that also included an oriental tent where fragrant Turkish coffee was served.
AUB conference: Academic and research institutions have a role in reducing food insecurity
During a two-day regional conference held at the American University of Beirut, academics and members of international, regional and local organizations agreed that it is the duty of academic institutions, such as AUB, to contribute to the training of policymakers and practitioners, entrepreneurs and managers, as well as experts and researchers who can act as agents of change capable of addressing food insecurity.

AREC Students Visit AMC (Agrimatco) Trial Station in the Beq’aa Plain
On August11, 2011, AREC students visited AMC’s Baalbek trial station. Accompanying the students were Drs. Mustapha Haidar, Yusuf Abu Jawdah and Motassem Sidahmad. Mr. Mohamad Msheik (AMC Lebanon Country Manager) welcomed the visiting group and briefed them on the history of the company’s trial station. Dr. Haidar talked about the importance of this hands-on field-trip and thanked AMC for the hospitality and the continuous support provided to AREC students. Both speakers stressed the importance of future cooperation between AUB-AREC and AMC. The tour of the station included a field visit to the vegetable and orchard trials. Students had the chance to see different vegetable and fruits varieties and cultural practices and learned how to evaluate vegetables according to the market criteria. During the tour, students raised many questions about growth conditions, varieties, agricultural operations, health management and the market demand. The visit ended with a splendid dinner invitation by AMC in Baalbeck. Dr. Haidar and on behalf of the visiting AREC group thanked AMC for the rich experience and opportunity.
Agricultural Sciences Department organizes 2011 conservation agriculture summer school
The Agricultural Sciences Department (AGSC) organized a summer school program about promoting conservation agriculture in the Arab region from September 5 to 17, 2011 at the Agricultural Research and Education Center (AREC). A highlight of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences (FAFS) events for this year, the summer school brought together about 65 professors and students from the University of Applied Sciences in Triesdorf, Germany, the University of Jordan, the University of Damascus, as well as the AGSC Department at the American University of Beirut (AUB).

Jane Harrigan, political economist, consultant to the World Bank and FAO, and professor at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London presented a lecture on November 30, 2011 on "The Economics of Food Security" which was sponsored by the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences (FAFS) at AUB and was part of a lecture series that will act as a prelude to the establishment of degree and non-degree programs in food security at FAFS
President's Club renovates two student facilities at AREC
In addition to lush scenic views, AUB students can now enjoy a basketball court and a women’s lounge at the AUB’s Agricultural Research and Education Center (AREC) in the Beqa’a Valley, thanks to the President’s Club, an association of volunteers who aim to improve the quality of life of AUB students, which funded the renovations of the two facilities.
