PM and Trustee Hariri commends University and Boldly AUB campaign
Prime Minister Saad El Hariri hosted a dinner for AUB's Board of Trustees and senior administration at the Grand Serail on Tuesday night to mark the launch of BOLDLY AUB: The Campaign to Lead, Innovate, and Serve, as well as AUB's 150th anniversary celebrations.

In unscripted remarks in English before his formal Arabic address, the Prime Minister spoke of the impression he took from Monday's gala launch ceremony: “Yesterday when I walked in and I saw everything that you have done, for me it was amazing, and you came out with an amazing motto which is BOLDLY AUB, but I would like Lebanon to be like AUB and I want it to be BOLDLY Lebanon. Hopefully, soon."

He continued in Arabic saying, “It is my pleasure to welcome you to this evening dedicated to supporting one of the most prestigious universities in Lebanon, the American University of Beirut. As we say in Lebanon, my testimony about this University cannot be objective… Our support for AUB has been firm for more than 30 years, on both the personal and national levels."

Prime Minister Hariri was elected as member of the AUB Board of Trustees in 2008. His late father, former Prime Minister Rafic Hariri was also a long-term friend and supporter of the University.  In December, Mr. Hariri was appointed to head the Council of Ministers by the newly-elected President Michael Aoun after a political stalemate that had lasted two-and-a-half years.

Executive VP for Medicine and Global Strategy and Raja N. Khuri Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at AUB, Dr. Mohamed H. Sayegh, spoke about the AUBMC 2020 Vision that was adopted by the Board of Trustees in June 2010 to change the face of healthcare in Lebanon and the region, and which will evolve to develop a Global Health Science Center as part of AUB's Health 2025 vision.

“An engaged and energetic visionary, Dr. Fadlo Khuri launched his vision, Health 2025, which will innovatively reengineer the health portfolio of AUB into an organically streamlined institutional model, AUB Health Sciences Campus," said Dr. Sayegh. “I proudly say that bold transformations require bold decisions, and this is exactly where AUB's capital campaign under the leadership of Dr. Khuri is meant to go."

President Fadlo R. Khuri spoke next about AUB's role in the delivery of high-quality education and freedom of speech, in transformative research, and in citizenship. He commended and emphasized the importance of the role of “servant leaders" and excellence at AUB.

“AUB is a vehicle for free thought that ultimately is channeled into the undiluted stream of excellence. We are a great educational and research university, one built on the lasting principle of service," said Dr. Khuri. “The principles that we have agreed upon are to be transparent, to be accountable, to be focused, and to be sustainable; but always to unapologetically pursue excellence."

In the presence of ministers, ambassadors, members of the Lebanese Parliament, the press corps, members of the Board of Trustees, and AUB leadership, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Philip Khoury, in turn expressed his confidence in AUB's potential as the most impactful university in the Arab world.

“AUB's ability to create even greater educational opportunities, world-class research, economic enterprises, and service to the nation and to the Arab world cannot be understated," said Dr. Khoury. “These are the cornerstones of our new ambitious campaign which we launched yesterday."

Termed by the Prime Minister as “a vital Lebanese resource and a source of great pride to the nation," AUB has set off for even more success and excellence, and a more inclusive and accessible, quality education.

“The Lebanese government is determined to have a partnership with [AUB], because it is the best research center in the country to stimulate the new economy and provide work opportunities for young men and women in Lebanon," said Prime Minister Hariri. “This is a commitment, from me personally as well as in my capacity as President of the Council of Ministers, for the American University of Beirut to remain a source of ideas, brains, and initiatives that will improve the standard of living in Lebanon and the entire Arab world."
