Interactive digital map brings together all health projects across AUB campus
The Strategic Health Initiative (SHI) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) officially launched an interactive digital map to highlight all the health-related initiatives taken across the multiple departments at the University.

Associate Vice President for Health Affairs at AUB, Dr. Shadi Saleh, explained that the map is part of AUB's 2025 health vision that was set by SHI in collaboration with departments working on related content across campus.

“We started to look into information to see who's doing what on health, but couldn't find anything," said Saleh, explaining that this is the first comprehensive collection of its kind ever since AUB started its health mission 150 years ago.

Saleh hoped that all “students, faculty, and staff will make use of the interactive map," now available online.

In turn, President Fadlo Khuri praised the office of SHI and all the other departments (Office of Communications and Office of Information Technology) that worked hand-in-hand to make the map a success. The map, according to Khuri, represents “an extraordinary effort to make divergent streams come together."

“The idea is not to replace the excellence that already exists, but to try to work on intersections that make sense at a time where we can lead not just Lebanon and the Arab world, but beyond in some major areas," added Dr. Khuri.

President Khuri lauded the map as highly valuable, not just for units to be aware of each other's efforts in major health areas, but also to tap on each other's strengths in order to create more opportunities for the future.

Maryline Mennassa, Programs and Initiative Officer at SHI, and Rami Farran, Director of Academic IT Services, explained how the map came to life and how it can be used effectively.

Mennassa spoke of content development, explaining that a Stata sheet was sent to all AUB departments to identify projects related to health. The projects were then combined under units, such as the different faculties, and themes, such as cancer and obesity.

Farran explained that vectors of different buildings were laid on the map, so when users hover over a building, information about the designated faculty will be displayed on the screen. When a theme is chosen, faculties that have projects related to it will light up on the map. Buildings are also colored according to the number of their ongoing projects. The user can also search for projects, check them under faculties, and read about them on a 'project profile card'. Online search is also optimized to look for keywords.

Twice a year, a Stata sheet will be sent out in order to update the information on the map. The map can be accessed through http://www.aub.edu.lb/shi/Pages/him.aspx.
