As part of its commitment to entrepreneurship and innovation, the American University of Beirut (AUB), announced a partnership with the UK Lebanon Tech Hub (UKLTH) in a formal signing ceremony attended by President Fadlo Khuri, Provost Mohamad Harajli, and Chairman of the Board of UKLTH Former Minister Nicolas Sehnaoui.

Former Minister Sehnaoui also announced from AUB the new UKLTH Funding Opportunities for Applied Research in a ceremony attended by AUB professors and students, as well as UKLTH staff.

UKLTH is an international initiative between the Central Bank of Lebanon and the UK government aiming to support the knowledge economy through two different programs: the International Accelerator Program and the International Research Program. Interested individuals have the opportunity to submit their research proposals and get funding for their projects.

UKLTH will support research and collaboration at AUB on ediamond (Electromagnetic Diabetes Monitoring Device): a novel, non-invasive blood glucose-monitoring device. ediamond is a continuous glucose monitoring device that will enable diabetic patients to check their glucose levels without coming into contact with their blood stream. The goal is to produce the world’s first non-invasive glucose monitoring device and empower patients who lack diabetes management capabilities. The investigators of this project are Dr. Joseph Costantine and Dr. Rouwaida Kanj from the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, and Dr. Assaad Eid from the Faculty of Medicine. UKLTH will fund the research and the implementation, and monitor the progress of this project.

During the ceremony, President Khuri emphasized the importance of universities as centers of research for innovation and technology start-ups.

“One of the most efficient ways to do business is to have the initial ideas come out from the academic institutions,” said President Khuri. “If you look at Silicon Valley, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, most of the companies have intimate ties with great universities.”

Former Minister Sehnaoui shared his natural optimism that Lebanon will become a technological hub a few years down the line, saying that he believes in the capabilities of the Lebanese people in terms of innovation and creation.

“It’s all about the will and the passion, and I am very passionate about this.

“We live in fantastic times because of the exponential growth of Information Technology, which opens great possibilities for R&D,” said Former Minister Sehnaoui. “We live in fantastic times, we are fantastic people, and AUB is a fantastic university, so we can create fantastic things.”
