  Founded in 1866, the American University of Beirut is a teaching-centered research university based on the American liberal arts model of higher education. AUB has over 8,000 students and 800 faculty members. The University encourages freedom of thought and expression and seeks to graduate men and women committed to creative and critical thinking, lifelong learning, personal integrity, civic responsibility, and leadership.

  AUB is accredited in the US by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and includes six faculties: Arts and Sciences, Medicine, Engineering and Architecture, Agricultural and Food Sciences, Health Sciences, and Business. AUB offers more than 130 programs leading to bachelor's, master's, MD, and PhD degrees. The main language of instruction is English.

Franz-Josef Ulm

A trustee since 2021, Franz-Josef Ulm is a professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology since 1999, and the Faculty Director of the Concrete Sustainability Hub. He is also a permanent Visiting Scholar at the Department of Civil Engineering at Birzeit University and is an elected Member of the National Academy of Engineering. Ulm won the Newsmaker award of Engineering News Record for his work on "paving the way for greener concrete” and the ASCE Von Karman Medal in 2012. He has published more than 250 scientific papers in international engineering mechanics, materials science and biomechanics journals, and more than 150 papers in refereed conference proceedings. Ulm is a graduate of Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées (PhD ’94).
