  Founded in 1866, the American University of Beirut is a teaching-centered research university based on the American liberal arts model of higher education. AUB has over 8,000 students and 800 faculty members. The University encourages freedom of thought and expression and seeks to graduate men and women committed to creative and critical thinking, lifelong learning, personal integrity, civic responsibility, and leadership.

  AUB is accredited in the US by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and includes six faculties: Arts and Sciences, Medicine, Engineering and Architecture, Agricultural and Food Sciences, Health Sciences, and Business. AUB offers more than 130 programs leading to bachelor's, master's, MD, and PhD degrees. The main language of instruction is English.

Cataloging and Metadata Services Department

Mission Statement

The Cataloging Department supports the University Library’s mission by processing library materials in all formats in most efficient and effective ways, facilitating the discovery and delivery of the UL information sources to the University community in support of research, teaching and learning needs.

Objectives

Catalogs and classifies library materials in accordance with international, regional, and national standards.
Maintains bibliographic and authority records to ensure quick and efficient retrieval of information.
Provides metadata for Arabic digitized periodicals to be included in the Digital Institutional Repository.
Provides metadata services and consultation for digital projects.
Works on bibliographic data mapping and migration from the library systems format to digital repositories and Content Management Systems.
Works with other departments in the Libraries to provide guidance for cataloging, metadata creation and EAD encoding.
Provides visibility for AUB library catalog records at the International Union Catalogs.
