Dr. Elie Akl, a tenured professor of medicine  at the American University of Beirut (AUB), has earned a distinguished place among the world's most highly cited researchers, with an international recognition by Clarivate, a global leader in data, insights, and analytics, for the 9th year in a row. According to Clarivate, “Of the world's population of scientists and social scientists, Highly Cited Researchers are 1 in 1,000," referring to the top 0.1% most cited scientists.

The Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers list stands as a hallmark in the global academic and scientific community, spotlighting individuals who have made substantial contributions with significant international scientific influence across diverse fields of study.

These most impactful researchers were identified based on multiple publications over the past 11 years ranking within the top one percent of citations for field and year in the Web of Science database. Compiled annually by Clarivate, the Institute for Scientific Information oversees the creation of this list, which this year featured 7,125 names of leading researchers in 20 broad fields of the sciences and social sciences from 67 countries.

Of the 7,125 researchers, 101 are affiliated with institutions in the Arab world. Dr. Elie Akl is the only scientist from the Arab world named to the 2023 list in Clinical Medicine and the Social Sciences (encompassing Public Health).

"I am very pleased to be included in this list for the 9th time in a row," expressed Dr. Akl, who serves as the Associate Dean for Clinical Research and the head of the division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics (GIMG) at the AUB Medical Center (AUBMC). “I am particularly proud as all the highly cited publications from the past 11 years based on which I was included on this list had AUB as my primary affiliation; in other words, they were based on research conducted at AUB."

Consistently recognized within the Highly Cited Researchers list since 2015, Dr. Akl's expertise lies in systematic reviews, practice guidelines, and conflict of interest, with a prolific publication record exceeding 500 peer-reviewed papers. He is a recognized leading expert in several areas of practice guideline development and a member of several high-level expert committees at the World Health Organization, including the highly influential Essential Medicines List (EML).
