Saouma Boujaoude Teaching Excellence Award

Dear members of the AUB community,

I am pleased to announce that, on September 4, 2024, the American University of Beirut (AUB) Board of Trustees approved unanimously the naming of the AUB Teaching Excellence Award, first established by the Office of the Provost in 2002. This award will now be known as the Saouma Boujaoude Teaching Excellence Award, in recognition of Professor Boujaoude's unmatched contributions to the field of science education, and to honor his lifelong commitment to improving educational standards and promoting scientific literacy at AUB, in Lebanon, and internationally.

A luminary figure in science education, Dr. Boujaoude is one of the most distinguished educators in the region, having been recognized with the Kuwait Prize (2017) and becoming the first person in the Arab world to be awarded the North America Research in Science Teaching's highest award. He was selected to receive the NARST 2020 Distinguished Contributions to Science Education through Research Award, where he was cited as the "nucleus of science education [in] the Arab region and an essential bridge between the region and the international science education community." Dr. Boujaoude is also a highly productive researcher, named among the top 2% most cited researchers in his field. His research has significantly influenced educational practices and policies both within and outside Lebanon. He has also played a crucial role in the development and reform of science curricula by advocating for the inclusion of more comprehensive, inquiry-based, and authentic learning experiences.

Dr. Boujaoude is an esteemed servant leader of AUB, his home for more than 35 years. He is currently the Mamdouha El-Sayed Bobst professor in the Department of Education, advisor to the dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences for faculty affairs, and senior advisor to the university president. He has served in many leadership positions, including as interim dean and associate dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, chairperson of the Department of Education, and director of both the Science and Math Education Center and the Center for Teaching and Learning. He is a legendary mentor whose students are leading educators and academics in the US and Arab world.

The naming of the Saouma Boujaoude Teaching Excellence Award is a tribute to a prominent academic, and a cherished colleague and mentor committed to excellence in teaching and learning as a scholarly endeavor. It celebrates a legacy of mentorship, selfless leadership, and excellence in education, inspiring generations to uphold the highest standards and the passion that Dr. Saouma Boujaoude himself has manifested throughout his outstanding career.
