Amid escalating Israeli attacks on Lebanon and a more than 200% increase in mortality rates, the healthcare sector faces immense pressure, threatening the lives of children and healthcare workers and exacerbating humanitarian crises, particularly in the most affected areas. In this context, the K2P Crisis Chronicles issued by the Knowledge to Policy (K2P) Center at the American University of Beirut (AUB) aims at guiding decision-makers and humanitarian organizations to address the deteriorating situation in a systematic and evidence-informed manner.
The chronicles address a wide array of challenges that affect civilian lives, especially children and displaced persons. The first chronicle outlines the risks faced by children due to the conflict, including health challenges, along with suggestions to protect them and improve living standards. The second chronicle discusses attacks on healthcare facilities and workers, calling for enhanced protection of the healthcare sector in line with international laws. The third report highlights internally displaced persons and their struggles due to a lack of coordination and funding, and outlines recommendations for improvements in safe shelter provision and meeting their basic needs. The fourth chronicle offers a comprehensive framework for a long-term response that includes shelter and public health requirements for the displaced, promoting sustainable support and alleviating ongoing challenges. Additional chronicles are being developed to address arising challenges.
The K2P Crisis Chronicles presents cross-sectoral recommendations focusing on healthcare and civilian protection to provide a comprehensive and sustainable response.
An Urgent Call to Action
The K2P Crisis Chronicles serve as an open call to unite local and international efforts toward a comprehensive and effective response grounded in scientific and practical evidence. Through this initiative, the center aims to mobilize the efforts of local and international policymakers, civil society organizations, UN agencies, and the private sector to effectively respond to existing challenges. The center's publications go beyond news reporting and aim to play a pivotal role in calling for advocacy, building awareness, and offering practical solutions to confront this aggression and its consequences.
