According to the author, an evaluation of mass media in Lebanon on the basis of their contributions to societal development reveals a triple failure as evident in the cases of the print media, radio, and television. The issue facing Lebanese mass media is the need to establish a balance between the three major forces operating on and interacting with these media – the public interest, the government, and the business sector. While recognizing the positive contributions of Lebanese mass media, the book contends that they have contributed to the alienation of the citizenry by making them feel that they are distant and separate from the political process. He contends that the “Lebanese media . . . fail to defend the public against power abuses in their society" and divert the attention of the common man from real social and political problems to marginal ones, revealing a need for planning and the establishment of regulatory policies.
