This book is a historical survey of Tunisian nationalism from the period immediately following the French occupation until the 1920s. It avoids problems of definition just as it avoids speculation concerning the different types and phases of nationalism. Historians of Tunisia have always recognized it as the region of the Maghreb most open to Eastern influence, and Professor Ziadeh stresses the importance of general Islamic movements as well as illustrating the strength of the traditional Zaytūna culture.
