AUB introduces a New Diploma in Humanitarian Engineering & Public Health Innovations

The American University of Beirut (AUB) proudly announces the introduction of the Diploma in Humanitarian Engineering and Public Health Innovations. The diploma is jointly offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, and it is open to AUB graduate students and professionals from diverse backgrounds.

The diploma is grounded in the mission of the Humanitarian Engineering Initiative launched at AUB in 2017. The journey began with a dynamic 2-day Hackathon, introducing two complementary perspectives: public health and engineering. From that pivotal moment, it evolved into a regular semester offering. A significant shift occurred as the course expanded into a tailored Minor and Certificate program for AUB undergraduate students. Throughout this journey, more than 300 students gained valuable skills in problem identification, design thinking, interdisciplinary approaches, and contextualized innovation.

Reflecting on this transformative experience, one AUB student participating in the minor noted “This experience underlines the inherent strength in interdisciplinary collaboration, emphasizing the need for diverse expertise to address humanitarian and public health challenges. …It allowed me to connect seemingly distant fields and that was not only beneficial academically but also serves as a valuable asset in approaching real-world challenges where holistic solutions are necessary."

The diploma consists of 15 credits of coursework, with a requirement of at least 12 credits at the graduate level. Core courses include courses related to the foundations of Humanitarian Engineering and Public Health Innovations.  Additionally, students are required to select one design course, one ethics course, and one social entrepreneurship course.

The diploma is open to all, inviting students and professionals to embark on a transformative educational journey.
