American University of Beirut

Chairperson’s Welcome Message

Our department is the largest in Lebanon with 18 subspecialized attending radiologists, 20 residents and 3 fellows (abdominal imaging and nuclear medicine). Our services follow an “organ system” arrangement in addition to the divisions of Interventional Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and PET, Pediatric Radiology, and Emergency Radiology. We provide all of our imaging services at AUBMC campus.

Our aim is to deliver state-of-the-art radiology services to our patients and referring physicians utilizing leading-edge imaging technology, advanced interventional therapies, and subspecialty interpretation of imaging studies. Our 9 divisions are staffed by fellowship trained subspecialized radiologists.  And we perform over 160,000 imaging studies each year at AUBMC.

Our department is equipped with the latest and most advanced imaging equipment. For example, our on-site Cyclotron, which is the largest in Lebanon, produces Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) for local use and distribution throughout Lebanon. We produce other organ/disease specific radiotracers, some exclusively by our cyclotron such as18F–FDOPA, and 18F–FLT.  Our Bobst unit for breast imaging is the largest in Lebanon with 4 full time dedicated, subspecialized breast radiologists. Over 7000 mammograms and 5000 ultrasound studies are performed every year in this unit. Our department is the first in Lebanon to have a dedicated pediatric radiology division staffed exclusively by fellowship trained pediatric radiologists.

In addition to clinical duties, our faculty is involved in many academic, educational and research activities. All our faculty are heavily involved in subspecialty multidisciplinary meetings with clinical services, and are integral to many of these services such as the St. Jude Children cancer program, bone marrow transplant program, and several multidisciplinary oncology programs such as prostate and breast cancer.  There are numerous ongoing collaborative research activities with other departments funded by internal and external grants.

Our residency program was established in 1950 and is the first radiology residency program in Lebanon to be accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-International (ACGME-I) in 2017. Our residents are involved in research and educational activities, and are urged and supported to obtain the Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR) during their residency. The vast majority of our residents enroll in subspecialty fellowships in the USA upon completion of their residency. We currently accept two fellows per year, one in abdominal imaging and another in Nuclear/PET imaging, and we plan to expand our fellowship program as our services expand.

We strive to provide adult and pediatric patients with the widest range of diagnostic and therapeutic imaging services at the highest possible standards.

I hope you enjoy visiting our website and learning more about our facility, equipment, faculty and services. Please free to contact me with any questions or to receive additional information about the department.
