First (Inaugural) Commission Meeting


The First (Inaugural)​ Meeting of the Lancet-AUB Commission on Syria: Health in Conflict was held on December 1 and 2, 2016 at the American University of Beirut​. The aim of the meeting was to initiate in-depth discussions about the Commission and set it on its path. 


​​The specific objectives of the meeting were to review and revise, as needed:  

          • The aim and objectives of the Commission and corresponding composition and structure m​
          • The scope (including them​atic areas) of the Commission
          • Available data and plans for evidence gathering to inform the work of the Commission, including in the thematic areas
          • Plan of work of the Commission 


Participants included the Commission co-chairs, commissioners, members of the International Secretariat supporting the Commission​​, selected Faculty of Health Sciences and American University of Beirut (host institution) leadership and faculty, and selected experts and partners.


​Participants agreed on:

          • Objectives and structure of the Commission to ensure fit for purpose
          • Scope and preliminary plan for thematic work and composition of thematic groups
          • Plan for evidence gathering and generation
          • Plan of work of the Commission leading to the launch of the Report
