Sept​ember 2017

        • 13 Sep: Commission e-Newsletter, Issue #3 is out. We apologize for the delay as the Commission Secretariat has been very busy but perhaps 'Better late than never!'.  
        • 08 Sep: Ambassadors ​ of UN Missions in New York receive Invitation​, Program and Concept Note of a High-Level Side Event during the High-Level Segment of the 72nd UN General Assembly. The event titled 'Protecting Health Care in Armed Conflict' is scheduled  on Friday 22 September at the UN Headquarters. Co-sponsoring Canada, Netherlands, Spain & UK have confirmed participation of senior officials including The Honorable​ Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Health of Canada. The Event is organized by the Lancet-AUB Commission on Syria & Safeguarding Health in Conflict Coalition.   
        • ​​​7-9 Sep: Meeting of Commission Co-Chairs & Thematic Group Co-Leads in Beirut to review progress on work of the Thematic Groups and advance preparations for Commission report. 

August 2017

        • 25 Aug: A 'Sa​​​ve the Date' announcement is sent to all UN missions in New York inviting them to participate in a side event  during the UN General Assembly's high-level segment on 'Protecting health care in armed conflict.'  Co-sponsored by Canada, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom, the event is organized by The Lancet-AUB Commission on Syria in collaboration with the Safeguarding Health in Conflict Coalition. The event will take place at the UN Headquarters (Conference Room A), on Friday 22 September, from 11:30 to 13:30. Join us! The event will also be followed by a roundtable discussion (with food & refreshments) at AUB New York focusing on the next steps. See UNGA event page for more details. 
        • ​​14-18 Aug: Researchers from two core laboratories of the Commission's Research & Documentation​​ Team (RDT), AUB and Harvard FXB Center, meet at FXB center in Boston to review progress on res​earch work and enhance collaboration on data analysis. 

July 2017

        • 7-9 Jul: The Commission participates in the 17th Annual International Conference of the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS), “Dilemmas in Healthcare in Syria: Needs Assessment, Dynamics, and Ethics​ in Istanbul, Turkey. Co-Chair Iman Nuwayhid speaks about 'Engaging science in armed conflicts: A perspective from the Lancet-AUB Commission on Syria' while Co-Chair Jennifer Leaning speaks about 'Perspectives on international humanitarian law: Examples from the war in Kosovo.' Commissioner Ahmad Tarakji, also SAMS president, delivers two talks about  'Delivering effective health care during conflicts and refugee crises' and 'Normalizing the weaponization of health care: Could we weather the storm?.'
        • 3-9 Jul: A Commission delegation conducts field visits to Gaziantep and Reyhanli in Turkey to meet with colleagues involved in response to the Syria crisis and conducts expert consultations there and in Istanbul to gather evidence on the impact of the crisis and the role of various partners in the response.

        • 24 May: Commission Co-Chair Samer Jabbour represents the Commission in a side meeting at the 70th World Health Assembly organized by UNRWA titled 'No Health without Peace for Palestinians and Palestine refugees​.’ He speaks about the Commission's approach to the refugee quesiton including Palestinian refugees from Syria (PRS).
        • 16-18 May: The Commission convenes its Third Meeting on these dates at AUB.
        • 11-14 May: Commission Co-Chairs Jennifer Leaning and Iman Nuwayhid and Commissioners Omar Dewachi and Paul Spiegel contribute in various ways (keynote, talks and session chairing) to the 48th Middle East Medical Assembly Conference: First Global Conflict Medicine Congress held at AUB. 
        • 5-6 May: WHO - Turkey hosts an Expert Consultation at its premises in Ankara, with the participation of Co-Chairs Samer Jabbour and Iman Nuwayhid and Research Fellow Fatima Ghaddar, to discuss evidence and current research on Syrian refugees in Turkey, collaboration with the Commission, and The Lancet Call for Papers on Health and the Syria Conflict. The Commission delegation conducts additional meetings with Turkish experts to gather evidence on the refugee situation and health system response in Turkey.

        • 30-31 Mar: Commission Co-Chair Samer Jabbour and Commissioner Fouad M. Fouad represent the Commission at a workshop on "Strengthening Human Resources for Health: Integration of Refugees into Host Community Health Systems." The workshop was co-­organized by the World Bank, OECD and the Center for Mediterranean Integration (CMI) in Marseille, France.  
        • 28 Mar: The School of Public Health, University of Bielefeld, hosts an Expert Consultation, with the participation of Commission Co-Chair Samer Jabbour and Research Fellow Mohammed Jawad, to discuss evidence and current research on Syrian refugees in Germany, collaboration with the Commission, and The Lancet Call for Papers on Health and the Syria Conflict. 
        • 27 Mar: Commission Research Fellow Mohammed Jawad participates in the Civil Society Dialogue Network (CSDN) Meeting organised by the European Peacebuilding​ Liaison Office (EPLO). The meeting focused on 'Assessing International Responses to the Syria Conflict' and included representatives from 44 international nongovernmental organisations.​
        • ​14 Mar: On​ the sixth anniversary of the Syrian conflict, The Lancet has: 
        • ​​13 Mar: The Commission's e-Newsletter Issue ​#1, covering Feb-Mar 2017, is out. 

February 2017 

        • 25-26 Feb: The Faculty of Health Sciences at the American University of Beirut hosts a meeting of the Commission' international and multi-institutional Research & Documentation Team (RDT).​
        • 20 Feb: The Lancet issues an expanded Call for Lancet on Health & the Syria conflict stressing research articles, highlighting priority areas and specifying 01 June 2017 as deadline for submissions.
        • 17 Feb: The Commission website is launched. 

January 2017 

        • 27 Jan: Commissioner Nasser Yassin co-leads the organization of a one-day conference 'Innovative Responses to the Syrian Refugee Crisis: AUB Forum' as part of the AUB4Refugees Initiative which he co-leads at AUB.
        • 06 Jan: The Lancet hosts a second meeting of the Commission to advance discussion on the Commission's research work.

​The Commission convenes three pre-launch Stakeholder consultations​ to engage different audiences and solicit views on the priorities for the Commission 

        • 28 Nov: AUB-wide Consultation with AUB faculty members and researchers 
        • 25 Nov: Leadership Consultation with participants including advisors to the Government of Lebanon, international non-governmental organizations, think-tanks and policy centers, and leading academics      
        • 21 Nov: Expert Consultation with Syrian practitioners, including those inside Syria and those in refugee countries​


        • Jul 2017: Commission Co-Chair Jennifer Leaning interviewed by Harvard Weatherhead Center for International Affairs. See Blog on Documenting the "Burden of War" on Syrians
        • Jun 2017: Feature story, A Hard Look at Syria's Health Crisis​, about the Commission in AUB's widely-circulated MainGate magazine.
        • Mar 2017: Health Policy paper, 'Health workers & weaponisation of health care in Syria: a preliminary inquiry for The Lancet - American University of Beirut Commission on Syria,' has received extensive media coverage. Some of this coverage is captured here
