On behalf of all my colleagues, welcome to the Department of Ophthalmology of the American University of Beirut.
Historically, our Department who parted from ENT in 1966, has been a pioneer in introducing the latest innovations in ophthalmic management, not only in Lebanon, but in the whole region. . To name but a few, Scleral Buckling for Retinal Detachment, Trabeculectomy for Glaucoma, and Laser Treatment for Diabetic, and other Retinopathies.
The story continues, and currently our Department is committed to the pursuit of excellence in all its missions. We believe that its success is due to the high quality care we provide to our patients, our innovative research and educational programs, and the outstanding training we are providing to future ophthalmologists.
The clinical site at the American University of Beirut - Medical Center sees approximately 17000 patients per year with routine as well as very complex ocular problems. We have ten examination rooms, procedure rooms and state of the art diagnostic equipment and lasers. The Department also includes a state-of-the-art Femtosecond LASIK refractive suite and Femtocataract suite for premium lens surgeries.
The Department has 12 full time faculty members nationally and internationally recognized specialists in the following disciplines:
- Cataract, and Glaucoma
- Cornea, and Refractive Surgery
- Pediatric Ophthalmology, and, adult strabismus
- Orbit, lacrimal and oculoplastics
- Uveitis and ocular inflammation
- Vitreoretinal diseases
- Neuro-ophthalmology
We serve a large referral base, and patients travel long distances to benefit from the expertise provided by our specialists.
Our faculty members are regularly invited to lecture, and teach at national, regional, and international academic meetings.
The Residency Training Program has been accredited by the ACGME few months ago, and is accredited by the Arab Board, and the ICO. It is one of the most sought after training programs in Lebanon and the region. The high end training of our residents has and is still allowing them to be accepted in the most prestigious academic fellowships for subspecialty training in the US, and Europe.
We currently have Pre-Residency Research Fellowships, and a Medical Retina Fellowship. Pediatrics and Cornea/Refractive Fellowships will be established soon.
